Objective of the program

To stimulate and to finance the production of knowledge related to the recovery of the areas impacted by the collapse, by means of the creation and strengthening of research regarding applied technologies, with internalization of generated technologies for the recovery process.

SENAI RFP for Innovation
• The launch of the new RFP for Industrial Innovation in partnership with Senai, scheduled for 2019, was not carried out. Cause: Changing socioeconomic management guidelines. Countermeasure: Carry out a satisfaction evaluation of the results of the Senai RFP for Innovation with the coordination of the programs by April 2020 to define the continuity of the projects in 2020.
Call FAPEMIG/FAPES/RENOVA (09/2018)
• The contracting of projects selected through the RFP, developed with FAPES and FAPEMIG (UNIVERSAL), was delayed and could not be completed in 2019 as planned. Cause: Delay in contracting processes due to the requirement to review the existing partnership draft. Countermeasure: Negotiate the draft agreement in parallel with the internal approval process in order to ensure contracting in 2020.

Skyvideo Project:
• On 08/20/2019, the current drone was improved with a multiparametric probe, responsible for physicochemical analysis, which was connected to its structure.
Tailing Usage:
• On 08/22/2018, the grant holders of the research project characterizing soil with tailings and the technical feasibility analysis for the production of ecological blocks completed the second sampling for resistance and water absorption tests of the ecological blocks.

SENAI RFP for Innovation:
• The SENAI Institute completed the development stage construction of the prototype of the Natural Treatment Plant, in partnership with Lia Marinha. This delivery refers to the milestone “Project for Natural Treatment Plant (“ETN”) - Senai RFP for Innovation closed”.

Call FAPEMIG/FAPES/RENOVA (09/2018):
• Approval of the outcome of the Call FAPEMIG/FAPES/RENOVA. The total amount of the investment will be R$ 5.6 million. The selected research proposals are:
Education and Culture Axis
- KNOWLEDGE: implementation of a knowledge and cooperation network between research, researchers, students and residents of the Doce River Basin;
- Possibilities and limits of school education in the reconstruction process of rural areas affected by the Fundao dam collapse;
- Historical-sensory cartographies of Bento Rodrigues, Paracatu de Baixo and Gesteira;
- FACE Lab: Project Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation workshops for the development of youth leadership and future skills.
Historical, Cultural and Artistic Memory Axis
- Sustainable use of iron ore dam tailings for the artisanal manufacture of adobe bricks for housing construction;
- Applicability of mining tailings to produce construction materials: effect of incorporation of lignocellulosic material and synthetic termite saliva on adobe properties;
- Sustainable use of sedimented tailings from the Doce River Basin in the development of components for civil construction.
Monitoring of Ecosystems Axis
- Biogeochemistry, ecogenomics, and ecotoxicology in areas that are influenced by the Doce River Mouth.
Water Use Axis
- System for monitoring the turbidity of the water of the Gualaxo do Norte River by means of Remote Sensing.
- Social and economic impacts resulting from the alteration of the water quality withdrawn from the Doce River for various uses due to the collapse of the Fundao dam (MG).
Sustainable Land Use (SLU) Axis
- Science and technology for environmental recovery of the Doce River Basin: methods, strategies and indicators of forest ecosystem restoration;
- Development of sustainable production matrix for the milk and dairy chain in the Upper Doce River and Governador Valadares regions;
- Evaluation and testing of symbiotic association between native species with fungi and FBN bacteria in spring areas, Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs) and water recharge areas along the Doce River Basin;

Senai RFP for Innovation - Call 2017/2018:
• Completion of the "I understand" project, a management training course for women.

The project for training Technicians in Agroforestry Recovery, in partnership with Instituto Terra, was completed.
Completion of the incubation process of “I understand", a startup supported by the Call for Industrial Innovation, a partnership between the Renova Foundation and Senai. The company developed a methodology to provide online training to basic communities. Methodological and technical test was conducted with the following groups: Barra Longa Embroiderers; Cooperative of Gesteira; Pout Pepper (Bento).

Receipt of proposals for Public Call for Research projects FAPEMIG X FAPES X Renova (RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION FOR THE RECOVERY OF AREAS IMPACTED BY THE COLLAPSE OF THE FUNDAO DAM - MARIANA - MG). In all, 34 proposals were received for the state of Minas Gerais and 6 proposals for the state of Espirito Santo.

Signing of the Agreement between the Renova Foundation and institutions responsible for organizing the Senai Call for Innovation.

An Agreement between the Renova Foundation and the Vale do Rio Doce University (Univale) was signed. The objective of this partnership is to ensure the mplementation of a research project for the use of mining tailings and materials removed from the Doce River and its banks.

On May 25, the Renova Foundation and Fapemig signed an agreement for research development. This document is largely due to the Technical Cooperation Agreement signed in May of the previous year, which states that public tenders for research funding should be made. After this agreement, the Renova Foundation Programs themes were defined. They were revised in April and sent to Fapes / Fapemig for approval. Renova is currently awaiting feedback from the institutions regarding the changes made to the themes. Public tenders will be launched following the response.

The Board of Governors of the Renova Foundation approved a Bid by Fapemig/Fapes to finance research projects that aim to find technological solutions for the recovery of areas impacted by the dam collapse. The idea is to promote initiatives that contribute to the solution for challenges and bottlenecks and that meet the demands of this process.

The NERE Project, conducted in partnership with Instituto Terra (Earth Institute), also kicked off this period. The initiative is aimed at training new professionals specialized in forest recovery.

The Renova Foundation published the names of the four projects selected by the Call for Industrial Innovation, opened with the objective of finding creative solutions that help to deal with the consequences of the Fundao dam collapse. The initiatives were proposed by the institutions: SkyVideo, Já Entendi; LiaMarinha and Phygitall. Two projects will receive R$ 400 thousand each and the other two, R$ 150 thousand, based on the thematic axes: Land and Water, People and Communities, and Reconstruction and Infrastructure.

An agreement was signed with Instituto Terra (Earth Institute) to grant up to 10 (ten) scholarships to students from the Doce River Basin region. They will be taking part in the course "Training of Ecosystem Restoration Agents" conducted by the Center of Studies on Ecosystem Restoration (NERE). Graduates will be differentiated professionals based on practical activities and expansion of the socio-environmental awareness for the work.

IEBT - Management and Innovation for Results provided its last service as agreed per contract, to prepare the technical, economic and commercial feasibility study for the creation of an Environmental Labeling Program Certification Process. The initiative is focused on any products that were created with waste and tailings derived from the mining process. The result of the study was sent to the Technical Board of Economy and Innovation and the CIF.

In February, the Renova Foundation and the Foundations for Supporting Research of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo defined the legal instrument that will govern the respective agreement for the 1st Call for funding research projects aimed at developing technological solutions for the challenges raised by the technical areas of the Renova Foundation. It is expected that the launch of the 1st Call will take place in April 2018.

The service that is elaborating the technical, economic and commercial viability study for the creation of the Certification Process using the Environmental Labeling Program by the IEBT submitted its second report - Management and Innovation for Results. The demand foresees the elaboration of a feasibility study for the certification process for products with inputs derived from mining. The final delivery is expected end March.

The Renova Foundation, through the Socioeconomic Technologies Program, in addition to organizing the thematic session "Financials cases for water security investments", was also invited to join the team of panelists as part of the programming of the 8th World Water Forum. The objective of the session is to identify and present public and private cases for water security investments for possible replication in other regions.

On January 29, the enrollment for the SENAI Call for Innovation was closed. In all, 76 entries were received from different Brazilian localities, which are being analyzed by SENAI's to verify compliance and eligibility according to the call's proposal. The Call for Sustainability and Reconstruction is aimed at companies that are interested in developing technologies that contribute to the process of recovering the impacts caused by the Fundao dam collapse. The Renova Foundation will support the development of up to four companies, which will be selected by the end of February.

Also underway are the negotiations related to the operationalization of the Call for Development and Investments for Scientific and Technological Research, coming from the Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG), Foundation for Supporting Research and Innovation of Espirito Santo (FAPES) and the Renova Foundation.

The program organized the participation of the mobile laboratory of SENAI-MG, the Lab Truck, during the “Entrepreneurship and Mariana” event, in Minas Gerais. The event was organized by Renova to stimulate the development of a business environment, entrepreneurship and innovation in the municipality. Technology courses were held for the population (3D printing and gambiology).

The Renova Foundation was selected to participate in the 8th World Water Forum as a coordination member of a thematic session on finance. The objective is to identify and present public and private cases of financing for water security with capacity for replication in other regions. Besides Renova, the National Industry Conference (CNI), Deltares (Netherlands), the French Agency for Development (France) and the World Bank were also part of the coordination.

On December 10, the SENAI Notice for Innovation in the Industry was launched, a result of the partnership between the Renova Foundation and Sebrae. The Call for Sustainability and Reconstruction is aimed at companies interested in developing technologies that contribute to the process of recovering the impacts caused by the Fundao dam collapse. The Renova Foundation will support the development of up to four companies.

Renova has contracted a consulting service to prepare a technical, economic and commercial feasibility study for the creation of a Certification Process, through an Environmental Labeling Program, for products that contain waste and tailings material derived from the mining process. The contracted consulting firm is the Institute for the Development of Technology-Based Companies and is expected to deliver the final version of the study in March 2018.

Continuing discussions related to the operation of the call for empowering and funding of scientific and technological research by the Foundations for Supporting Research (FAPs), resulting from the Technical Cooperation Agreement between FAPEMIG, FAPES and the Renova Foundation.

In November, institutional meetings were held to continue the discussions on the operationalization called the promotion and financing of scientific and technological research by the Foundations for Supporting Research (FAPs), from the Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG), the Foundation for Supporting Research and Innovation of Espirito Santo (FAPES) and the Renova Foundation. Drafts were defined of the necessary legal instruments (Call and Agreement of Technical and Financial Cooperation).
The program also formalized a partnership with SENAI Nacional to participate in the Public Notice of Innovation for the Industry. The purpose of the notice is to finance the development of new products, processes and innovative services of the national industry. The projects selected should promote increased competitiveness and industrial productivity through technological innovation and the promotion of innovative solutions for environmental, social and infrastructure recovery and compensation in the region. The notice is scheduled for release on December 10, 2017.
Renova held a meeting with SENAI-MG's Center for Technology and Innovation to identify and evaluate possible initiatives of the institution, similar to the Open Laboratory, that can be developed in Mariana (MG). The intention is to build a space that stimulates the development of an ecosystem of entrepreneurship and innovation in the municipality.
The program met with the State Department of Social Development (Sedese) in the Administrative City to present its main initiatives and verify the possibility of developing joint actions.

Ongoing is the development of the first bidding for the promotion and financing of scientific and technological research, based on the Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of Minas Gerais (Fapemig), the Foundation for Supporting Research and Innovation of Espirito Santo (FAPES) and the Renova Foundation.

The Socioeconomic Technologies Program and the Regional Diversification and Development Program have joined their efforts and worked together to hold the event Renova Entrepreneurship, with a multisector approach. The project will contribute to the programming with the hiring of a Lab Truck, holding technological workshops with participants. This action is part of Open Lab Senai-MG, which offers technological infrastructure for prototyping in a collaborative environment.

In the month previous to the launch of the 1st Bidding for the promotion and financing of scientific and technological research, based on the Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG), the Foundation for Supporting Research and Innovation of Espirito Santo (FAPES) and the Renova Foundation, with the intermediation of the Institute for Integrated Development of Minas Gerais (INDI), the meeting of the Management Committee had as main agenda the discussion and the forwarding of relevant items that direct and compose a research call. The Renova Foundation presented to the research institutions involved the thematic lines that will be considered and that were raised along the technical areas of the Renova Foundation. Having said this, it is considered that the document of the call enters the final construction phase for the launch of the 1st Joint Call.

Based on the growing communication and relation between programs, the Socioeconomic Technologies Program and the Regional Diversification and Development Program have directed their efforts and worked together to hold an event with a multisectoral approach promoted by the Industrial and Agricultural Commercial Association of Mariana (ACIAM) and the Chamber of Shopkeepers (CDL). Renova's performance at the event will be divided into two main pillars: stimulus to the development of business environment and stimulus to entrepreneurship and innovation, the latter being the competence of the program in question.

The term of reference for the elaboration of a feasibility study for the certification of products that have among their components mining tailings, according to Resolution 100 of the Inter-Federative Committee (CIF), was prepared and sent to the Technical Board of Economy and Innovation (CTEI).

The Management Committee of the partnership between the Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG), the Foundation for the Supporting Research and Innovation of Espirito Santo (FAPES) and the Renova Foundation, held their 3rd meeting to follow up on actions related to the construction of the public notice of the research. During the meeting, the implementation strategies were discussed for the outlined resources for contribution to the public notice. In parallel, the legal formalization of the term between the parties were studied, as well as the definition of the lines of research, according to the technical needs of the areas of the Renova Foundation.

The Innovation team applied to participate in the 8th World Water Forum, promoted by the international organization World Water Council (WWC). The international event will take place in March 2018, in Brasilia (DF). The team competes for the coordination of two panels: Financing the ecosystem services dynamics and Financial cases for water security investments.

In a meeting with Professor Álvaro Pereira Jr, from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), the team met the “Endeavor in Action" project, which provides the student of the curriculum innovation with the opportunity to build an innovative project, which will be evaluated by an external committee. The goal is to strengthen the entrepreneurial culture. The professor also presented a parallel work of restructuring the business incubator of the university. The Renova Foundation was invited to join the committee that will build the new incubator model. This connection is of interest to the program, since it makes the development of entrepreneurship projects necessary to promote the culture of innovation in the municipality of Mariana (MG) and region.

Based on the technical cooperation agreement signed between the Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of Minas Gerais (Fapemig), the Foundation for the Supporting Research and Innovation of Espirito Santo (Fapes) and the Renova Foundation, with the intermediation of the Institute for Integrated Development of Mines General (INDI), a Management Committee was formed, consisting of a representative of each of the participating entities. The committee held the second meeting of the partnership, which is currently held once a month, to follow up on the definitions of the first public notice, which is scheduled for October/17.

The Management Committee, which is a partnership between the Renova Foundation and the Research Support foundations in Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo (Fapemig and Fapes), held its first meeting in which the approval flow of the themes for the respective notices was defined, with direct participation of the Technical Boards and the Inter-Federative Committee (CIF).

Based on an agreement signed between the Renova Foundation and the Foundations for Supporting Research of the States of São Paulo and Espirito Santo (FAPEMIG and FAPES), early May, the Socioeconomic Technologies Innovation and Development program directs efforts towards the elaboration of the definition, strategy and long-term objectives.

Whereas on May 30 the Economy and Innovation team was present at the launch of the first edition of the Synapse Innovation Program of the State of Espirito Santo, organized by FAPES and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (Secti), in partnership with the Certi Foundation, whose intention is to strengthen the culture of innovative entrepreneurship and support the emergence of new businesses. The objectives are to promote innovative projects throughout the territory impacted and to articulate partnerships with different institutions and bodies that contribute to the development of high impact social workers.

The minutes of the technical cooperation agreement term, aimed at the implementation of knowledge production actions associated with the recovery of the economic, social and environmental damage resulting from the collapse of the Fundão dam, were sent to the Inter-Federative Committee (CIF). The agreement was signed between the Renova Foundation, the Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of Minas Gerais (Fapemig) and the Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of Espírito Santo (Fapes), with the mediation of the Integrated Development Institute of the State of Minas Gerais (Indi).

Contracts were signed with institutions active in the protection and promotion of research in the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. They are: Coordination of Improvement of Higher Educated Personnel (CAPES), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of São Paulo (Fapes) and the Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of Minas Gerais (Fapemig).

Continuation of the program definition phase, to be completed in March 2017, through contact with institutions that already have expertise in the support and promotion of research in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo and that have already shown interest in participating in the work together with the Renova Foundation. They are: Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of Minas Gerais (Fapemig), Foundation for Supporting Research of the State of São Paulo (Fapes), Coordination of Improvement of Higher Educated Personnel (CAPES) and National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) .

The program definition phase continues in progress, which should be concluded in March 2017, in addition to the first meeting of the Technical Chamber that was held about the subject.
