11 – Recovery of schools and reintegration of school community

Objective of the program

To reconstruct, to purchase furniture, equipment and materials necessary for the schools impacted by the Fundão dam as far as Candonga, and to provide the means to enable the reintegration of the respective students and professionals involved in the daily school process.

Vacation course held in Barra Longa and Mariana (students from Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo) from January 15th to 19th and 22nd to 26th, 2024. Around 120 children were served during the course.

In December, graduations took place at the municipal schools of Paracatu de Baixo and Bento Rodrigues in Mariana and EM José Vasconcelos Lanna in Barra Longa. With this, compliance with the 2023 calendar of school events was completed.

15 events were held throughout the year, benefiting around 350 students, as well as school professionals and children's families.

On November 18th, the culmination of the Psychopedagogical Support Project at the Bento Rodrigues School was held in Bento Rodrigues, during the definitive resettlement, called: “Bento: Past, present and future". With the participation of 300 people from the Bento Rodrigues School community (Students, Teachers, School Staff and family members), the project was carried out through workshops for students and training for professionals. This year, the theme chosen by the school was “Living Mariana”, a recovery of the city’s history. As a result of the activities carried out in the classroom, on this day an event was held on the school grounds, which included an exhibition of students' work and presentations of plays based on the content studied. The “Bento” project: Past, present and future” has been carried out since the collapse of the Fundão dam and seeks to give new meaning to the event. This year, the project worked on connecting students with the community through the history of the municipality Mariana, from the colonial period to the present day.

On October 21, 2023, PG11 held the first event held at the permanent school of Paracatu in celebration of Children's Day, with the participation of students, teachers and school staff (135 people). The event was a day of leisure for children, with capoeira workshops, dancing and lots of toys for the kids.
As it is the first time that students experience the new school, for those who will move to the resettlement. This is an important milestone as in the case of Novo Bento Rodrigues it was a fundamental reinforcement for the transition of families and the school itself to the permanent space.

On September 7th, a parade was held in the city of Barra Longa, as a culmination of the Psychopedagogical Support Project at the Padre Epifânio State School. With the participation of approximately 500 students and 40 teachers, the action took place through workshops and training involving the entire Padre Epifânio School. At the September 7 parade, the classes were divided into a mixed format and by wings, according to the themes that were discussed in the classrooms, focusing on the theme: The history of Barra Longa: our history has roots.

Between the 17th and 28th of July, the Holiday Course was held for the children of Mariana (Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu) and Barra Longa, this initiative was carried out in conjunction with the PG12, where handicraft, arts and crafts workshops, cooking and games for 120 children who were on vacation were offered daily.

On July 31, the transition from the temporary school to the definitive school for the Collective Resettlement of Bento Rodrigues took place. Around 170 people benefited from this event, including students, teachers and other professionals. The beginning of operation of the definitive school in Bento Rodrigues ends the legal obligation of PG11 to maintain a temporary property for the maintenance of the adequate school routine of the community involved. The temporary school in Bento Rodrigues for eight years was of fundamental importance, as it guaranteed a space for coexistence, sociability and meeting, as well as minimized the difficulties of adaptation of the children in the Mariana headquarters. In addition, PG11 was responsible for a successful Transition Plan that aimed to gradually promote the appropriation of students, teachers and the school community to the new school space in the Resettlement.

Support for holding the Family Festival for the school communities of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo, on May 27, 2023. In Bento Rodrigues, the event took place at the school in the new district and included a lecture for parents/guardians, as well as workshops for students and presentations produced by the school itself. In Paracatu, activities took place at the temporary school with workshops for parents and students. In total, more than 400 people participated in the actions. Support for the implementation of the school's calendar of events is provided for in the Sociability Project and, in addition to strengthening community ties, contributes to the engagement of communities in the transition to collective resettlements.

Welcoming event - Beginning of the school year for students at EM Bento Rodrigues, Early Childhood Education and Early Years, on 02/10/23, from 8 am to 11 am. The action included food and space with toys and is part of the scope of the Sociability Project.

Completion of the 2022 school year at the temporary schools in Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo, maintained by the Renova Foundation until the delivery of definitive equipment in the respective resettlements. In addition to ensuring adequate structure and transportation for the impacted school community, PG11 also carries out events and actions for socialization and psychopedagogical support that contribute to maintaining the bonds of the impacted school community.

Completion of the second cycle of Institutional Psychopedagogical Support at EM Bento Rodrigues with a focus on the transition to the new district. On November 12, the event called “Bento Vive e Resiste” was held at the Resettlement school, with presentations of all the works produced during the school year in this project.

Support for holding the Children's Day Party at the schools in Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo, on October 7th. In Paracatu, the event took place at Casa do Lago and included workshops and a treasure hunt. In Bento Rodrigues, the celebration took place at the school in the new district and the children participated in games, dances and competitions, in addition to having fun with inflatable toys. In all, more than 230 children participated in the two celebrations.

Beginning of face-to-face classes for the Youth Course (“Desembola na Cultura”) in Barra Longa and Mariana. After an online vote, young people from Barra Longa and Mariana (Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo) chose to deepen their knowledge in the areas of Event Production and Digital Marketing. Classes took place until the month of November.

Holding of #PartiuFérias in the municipalities of Mariana and Barra Longa with free workshops on cooking, ecology and handicrafts, which are striking traits of the local culture and passed on from generation to generation.

In order to promote the resumption of community ties of former students from temporary schools, the Socialization Event for Young People was held. The event had the participation of young people from the communities of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo, providing reunions and lots of technologies.

Holding of June festivals in schools in Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo. By choice of the directors, the parties were held in temporary schools. In Paracatu de Baixo, the party was open to the entire school community and in Bento Rodrigues, there was only the participation of students, not being open to families.

Holding of the Family Party in the Bento Rodrigues school community, at the new resettlement school. About 280 people participated in the event, which included presentations from kindergarten and primary school classes. For students in the final years, graffiti and lettering workshops were held.

Conclusion and delivery of the 30 Political Pedagogical Projects of Mariana, with the completion of the works in the schools Cônego Paulo Diláscio, Dom Luciano Pedro Mendes de Almeida and CEMPA - Municipal Education Center Padre Avelar. This delivery is linked to indicators I09 and I11. Both will be measured in July/22, after the training course for pedagogical specialists and the end of the Pedagogical Support Project for Mariana's municipal network.

Following the World Health Organization (WHO) warnings and the Ministry of Health and given the increase in confirmed coronavirus cases (new COVID-19 virus) in Brazil, the Renova Foundation decided to adopt preventive and safety measures suspending its field activities. Therefore, the following activities are being carried out remotely:
• Remote training for teachers from impacted schools in Mariana/MG (inclusion centers) on psychopedagogy.
• Production of educational digital content to distribute throughout the Municipal Education Network of Barra Longa/MG.

Following the warnings from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health and given the increase in confirmed coronavirus cases (new COVID-19 virus) in Brazil, the Renova Foundation decided to adopt preventive and safety measures, suspending its field activities. Therefore, the following activities are being carried out remotely:
• Teacher Training (inclusion centers) on psychopedagogy of impacted schools in Mariana (MG).
• Creation of educational digital content to be distributed throughout the Municipal Education Network of Mariana (MG).

• In adherence to the warnings from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health, and given the increase in confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Brazil, the Renova Foundation has decided to adopt preventive and safety measures, suspending its field activities. Psychopedagogical Support
• The conceptual and methodological adjustment of the Psychopedagogical Care scheduled for November/2019 was not completed. Cause: lack of alignment with the Technical Board of Education, Culture and Recreation (CT-ECLET) regarding the understanding of how the Psychopedagogical Support should be conducted. Countermeasure: approve the new scope of Psychopedagogical Support in the Program Review workshops in January/2020.
Support to Temporary Schools of Mariana
• The signing of the Term of Delivery of the Conclusion of the infrastructure improvements of the Temporary School of Bento Rodrigues, scheduled for November/2019, was not completed. Cause: The school has made a new request for improvement of its structure. Countermeasure: Create approval flow for infrastructure improvement deliveries for the Temporary Schools by January/2020.

• Delivery scheduled for September/2019, referring to the milestone “Resolution 238: Item 1 – The Renova Foundation must conduct the conceptual and methodological adjustments necessary to comply with TTAC Clause 93, as instructed by CT-ECLET Technical Note No. 15/2018 and other accompanying documents” was postponed to November/2019, due to the need for conceptual review of psycho-pedagogical care. The program has been aligned internally and a new proposal for this theme will be submitted to the Technical Board for validation. A workshop was held in September to align and indicate the formation of an Impacted Community Protection Plan to address the various psychological, mental health, and social impacts and impacts on learning and teaching due to the Fundao dam collapse.
Mariana Temporary Schools Project
• Signing of the Terms of Delivery of the Completion of Infrastructure Improvements of the Temporary School of Bento Rodrigues did not occur in October, due to a new request of the school for adjustments. The program is being aligned internally to proceed with the adjustments. This delivery refers to the milestone “Completion of the execution of infrastructure improvement works at the Bento Rodrigues Temporary School”.

• Delivery scheduled for September 19 - conceptual and methodological adjustment necessary to comply with TTAC Clause 93, as instructed by CT-ECLET Technical Note No. 15/2018 and other attached documents - was postponed to the month October 19.

• Some activities related to determining the role of the pedagogical themes for the Political Educational Project (PPP) of the 44 schools of the Mariana municipal network were delayed. As a countermeasure, the area is developing strategies with the supplier to carry out the pending activities in September/2019 without impacting the delivery deadline in October/2019.

Pedagogical Support Project for the Municipal and State Schools of Barra Longa and Mariana:
• Finalized the determination of the pedagogical themes of the Barra Longa municipal schools. Pedagogical themes: stages of learning for the subject areas - Portuguese Language and Mathematics - and pedagogy of projects for the subject areas - Geography, History and Science.
• Drafted a work plan for the elaboration of the Pedagogical Policy Plan for the Mariana and Barra Longa State Schools.
• First meeting was held with members of the CRC (Coordinating Representative Commission) of each Mariana municipal school to present the proposal for the elaboration of the PPP.
Psychopedagogical Support Process for School-Aged Impacted Children:
• Held a short course on neuroeducation. The activity was attended by teachers from Padre Jose Epifanio State School, Claudionor Lopes State School and Gustavo Capanema Municipal School in Gesteira, and Jose de Vasconcelos Lanna Municipal School.

Mariana Temporary Schools Project:
• Implementation of actions of the Mariana Temporary Schools Project (Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo schools), related to rental of the site, maintenance of infrastructures and support for school routine, including socialization activity.

• Social, cultural and leisure activities related to the Mariana and Barra Longa Temporary Schools Project. Activity: provided support to the organization of the Magic World of Reading Project at the Gustavo Capanema School, in Gesteira, with activities of Connection Water.
Psychopedagogical Support Process for School-Aged Impacted Children:
• A mini course on neuroeducation with teachers of the state network of Mariana and Barra Longa, as part of the Psychopedagogical Support Project, could not take place due to scheduling conflicts. This activity will take place in June 2019.

• Continuity of the actions of the Mariana Temporary Schools Project (Bento Rodrigues School and Paracatu de Baixo School), related to the lease of the site, maintenance of infrastructures and support to school routine, including socialization activity.
• Continuity of actions that offer transport for the students of the communities of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo by van and micro-bus, and offer commuting allowances for teachers and staff of the Bento Rodrigues school.
• Technical and pedagogical meeting with parents of selected students who will be evaluated in the Psychopedagogical Support Process in the municipal schools of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo.
• Elaboration of the work plan of the Pedagogical Support Project for the 14 schools of the state network of Mariana and Barra Longa.
• Continuity of the actions of the Pedagogical Support Project: formation of the Coordinating Representative Commission (CRC) and commission of the 44 municipal schools of the Pedagogical Support Project for the Schools of Mariana and Barra Longa.

On 03/23/2019, the 2019 year of the Pedagogical Support Project for the schools of the municipalities of Mariana and Barra Longa was opened with the lecture “Taking care of the teaching voice: vocal health in focus". The lecture was attended by 361 teachers in Mariana and 44 teachers in Barra Longa.
Educational Meetings were held with Managers of the Municipal Education Network of Mariana on the election of the Collegiate in the municipal schools, and were attended by 32 people, among principals and pedagogical specialists of the region referring to the Pedagogical Support Project.
Meetings were held with the Regional Superintendents of Education of Ouro Preto and Ponte Nova to present a proposal for pedagogical assistance to the state schools of Mariana and Barra Longa, as well as psycho-pedagogical support to school-aged children that were impacted and who attend the public state schools of the two municipalities.
A mini-course on neuroeducation was held with teachers of the Municipal School of Bento Rodrigues as part of the Psychopedagogical Support Project. The training was attended by 18 teachers.
Continuity of psycho-pedagogical support activities with students of the municipal school of Paracatu de Baixo: meeting with the families about the importance of participation in the psycho-pedagogical evaluation process and consultation and evaluation of two students.
Continuity of actions that offer transport to the students of the communities of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo by van and micro-bus, and offer commuting allowances for teachers and staff of the Bento Rodrigues school.
Activities were held that are part of the initiative called “Connection Water”, coordinated by the Foundation, in the schools of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo in Mariana, and Jose de Vasconcelos Lanna in Barra Longa. Art workshops were held with the theme “water and environment” - Dudu Capim and Sarara Capim -, presentation by the “Trupe Conexao”, visits to the community garden of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo and other activities.

Psycho-pedagogical support activities continued at the Municipal School of Paracatu de Baixo.

Between 1/22 and 1/25, the workshop Summer Connection was held for children and youth from the communities of Mariana, Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo. The objective of the event is to develop integrated actions with the schools that had to be relocated, with the organization of artistic and cultural activities.
On 01/24, elaboration of the activity plan for continuity of pedagogical and psycho-pedagogical support for the beginning of the school year of the municipal public-school system in Mariana. Action carried out by the Renova Foundation together with the Department of Education of Mariana.
On 01/29, dialogue began with the Department of Education on the renovation works at Gustavo Capanema Municipal School in Barra Longa. This contact with the Department of Education is the first step of the works to meet the integral demand of the Official Letter 03/2019, dated 01/09/19, by the Department of Education of Barra Longa to the Renova Foundation.

In Mariana, the students of the Municipal School of Paracatu de Baixo and the Municipal School of Bento Rodrigues participated in the "Connect Play" Event.

There was also a visit to the construction works of the Paracatu de Baixo School. With capacity to attend about 60 children from pre-school to 9th grade, the space is divided into five classrooms for students aged 5 to 15 years, attending to the families of Paracatu and the Department of Education of Mariana. The project presented by Renova was validated with the school community and with the Department of Education. In August, with the delivery to the community, it will be time to celebrate the new phase of the Paracatu de Baixo school.

Several meetings with the Secretary of Education, addressing topics such as: the Integral Education Program, to discuss the work plan detailing the program maintenance expenses and the list of materials to be acquired by Renova; the presentation and validation of the resumption of pedagogical and psycho-pedagogical support and work methodology; and the Integral Full Time Education Program - discussion on the term of partnership, the expected costs for contracting activities for 32 schools in Mariana - which involved the presence of the Municipal Attorney.

In Mariana, the students of the Municipal School of Paracatu de Baixo and the Municipal School Gustavo Capanema of Gesteira visited the Association of Collectors of Recyclable Material of Mariana (Camar). The action integrates the activities of Environment Connection.

Students from the Municipal School Gustavo Capanema also visited the Osquidonteca. The initiative is part of the stage “Raising Awareness”, which seeks to inspire ideas in the students to transform the school library. Also in Mariana, the community participated in the first visit to the construction site were the new Paracatu de Baixo School is being built.

In Barra Longa, the activities of the Environment Connection program took place in the Municipal School Jose Vasconcelos Lanna. One of the proposed actions was the earth painting workshop, held together with the Community Center for Culture and Development (CPCD).

On June 29, the School Community Recovery and Reintegration Program was approved by the CIF.

The Technical Board approved the program’s definition in May. The scope of the Psychopedagogical Support Project was adjusted and will now include municipal and state schools in the Mariana and Barra Longa education systems.

In Mariana, the team planned the Connection, Playing and Environment Project activities alongside schools in Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo. The resulting proposals were presented to the Environment and Education Offices. During the meeting, the teams also discussed the continuing pedagogical and psycho-pedagogical support work in the municipalities.

In addition, Renova supported the Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo temporary schools’ Family Party.

Works on the new temporary school in Paracatu de Baixo have also begun. The activity schedule was presented to the school committee and the Department of Education.

The Community Technology Center of Barra Longa (with modem and logical network) was installed this month. The Department of Education will define, together with the Jose Vasconcelos Lana Municipal School (Barra Longa), the best way to operate and serve the community.

Cameras were installed inside and outside the Padre Jose Epifanio Goncalves State School (Barra Longa), in order to monitor the common room, the library, the computer lab and the schoolyard. Also planned were the following extracurricular school activities with the Osquindo Club: Play Connection (Children's Week) and Environmental Connection (Environment Day).

Throughout the month of April, transportation was also provided for teachers, students and staff to the temporary schools and locations where the extracurricular school activities are held, in Mariana and Barra Longa.

On April 30, renovations at the Bento Rodrigues School were completed.

In March, structural materials and pedagogical support were provided to the affected schools of Mariana and Barra Longa in Minas Gerais.

This month, the Water Connection project was carried out in the affected schools of Mariana and Barra Longa, with artistic interventions, workshops, storytelling and showcase of activities. The activities involved students, educators and staff. It also prepared the program for the presentation of local projects, such as the initiatives of the Environmental Department of Mariana and the project of the Barra Longa resident Roandes, who presented to the Gesteira school his project for the recovery of springs. Students aged between 4 and 12 years old participated, being 27 from Paracatu de Baixo, 63 from Bento Rodrigues, 74 from the Jose Vasconcelos Lana School and 6 from the Gustavo Capanema School.

The conceptual project and the schedule for the construction of the new Paracatu de Baixo Temporary School were presented and approved by the School Commission.

The property to house the Municipal School Paracatu de Baixo, in Minas Gerais, was approved by the PTA, Department of Education and Technical Advisory Body Caritas.

About 1,000 people participated in activities of the 2018 Summer Connection Project in Mariana and Barra Longa, Minas Gerais, including youth, children and adults from Mariana and Barra Longa. The project included the Minas Gerais communities of Bento Rodrigues, Paracatu, Gesteira, Barretos, Mariana and Barra Longa-Sedes.

A meeting was held with the school community of Paracatu de Baixo (MG) to present the architectural project of the new temporary school and planning of the relocation of the school. The move to the new building is scheduled for July 2018.

A meeting was held in Mariana (MG), between the Renova Foundation, Department of Education and about 600 teachers to present the scope proposal for the Pedagogical Support Program for the municipal education network, based on feedback on the assessment, which was carried out with the school community in 2017.

The calendar for actions to support socio-cultural extra-curricular school activities has been created. The Reintegration Project of the temporary schools will take place in the Municipal Schools of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu (Mariana) and Jose de Vasconcelos Lana (Barra Longa).

In January, the property that will house the Paracatu de Baixo Municipal School - located at 102 Manoel Leandro Correa Avenue, downtown Mariana (MG) - was approved by the PTA, Department of Education and technical advisory body Caritas.

The Summer Connection Project resumed in 2018, with workshops featuring music, toy making, dance, event production and DJ. The second edition of the project was attended by about 1000 people, including youth, children and adults from Mariana and Barra Longa, Minas Gerais.

The Renova Foundation also installed a security system in the Bento Rodrigues Municipal School (MG).

A joint visit was made by the PTA, the Department of Education and the technical advisory body Caritas, to several locations that might house the Municipal School Paracatu de Baixo (MG). The Renova Foundation supported the graduations of the 9th-grade students of the Bento Rodrigues Municipal School, elementary students, 5th and 9th graders of the Paracatu de Baixo Municipal School and of the students of Paracatu who finished high school in the school of Aguas Claras, in Minas Gerais. An initial meeting was also held for planning the next edition of “Summer Connection".

The Renova Foundation arranged the delivery of the Auto Inspection Certificate of the Fire Department (AVCB) to the Gustavo Capanema School, in the district of Gesteira, Barra Longa (MG). The school also received a book collection for its library.
There was also the replacement of teaching materials and missing equipment for the affected schools, as requested by the Municipal Department of Education of Barra Longa.
In November, Renova supported the implementation of the Bento Rodrigues Municipal School project, called "Bento Past, Present, Future", and organized a visit by the committee of municipal councilors to the temporary facilities of the municipal schools of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo.
In Paracatu de Baixo (MG), Renova met with the school community, which defined the search for a new property to house the temporary school.

Renova supported the week-of-the-child festivities in the schools of Mariana, with street entertainment, and organized talks from the National Campaign for Safety in Traffic in the institutions.

The new building of the José de Vasconcelos Lanna Municipal School was delivered to the community of Barra Longa, helping to organize the Family Festivities to inaugurate the new facilities.

As a certification of safety and regularization of the building, the Fire Department Inspection Record was handed to the Padre Epifanio School in Barra Longa.

In Mariana, there was also a change in school transport. Now, the company Indaia Transportation and Logistiques is responsible for the service.

The proposal for the project of the recreation area that will be built in the school and delivered at the beginning of 2018 was presented to the Municipal Department of Education of Paracatu de Baixo, in Minas Gerais, and to the teachers of Municipal School Paracatu de Baixo.

A meeting was held with managers and teachers from Mariana (MG), in which the questionnaire prepared by them was validated and will be sent to the Renova Foundation, Department of Education, Schools and parents of students. This material will guide the evaluation of the education in the town.

A meeting was held with the Coordinating Committee for setting up of the Educational Policy Project of the schools of Barra Longa (MG).

The temporary schools Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo, in Minas Gerais, received the certificate of Auto Inspection of the Fire Department (AVCB) and were released for operation. The team held a conversation circle with students of the Municipal School of Paracatu de Baixo on the resettlement process of the community.

Moreover, the first stage of the construction works for the safety and comfort improvement of the students of Paracatu de Baixo (MG) was completed.

Works related to the construction of the temporary schools in Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu (MG) were monitored, as agreed with the Department of Education of Mariana. The Term of Reference for hiring a psychopedagogy consultant was drafted, together with the Mariana (MG) and Barra Longa (MG) departments of education. The Renova Foundation supported the graduation events of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu, both in Minas Gerais. Furthermore, several technical visits took place for the definition of infrastructure improvements to the temporary school of Paracatu and the identified property to allocate the temporary school of Bento Rodrigues. The school communities of Mariana and Barra Longa participated in the activities of "Summer Connection", which was aimed at providing fun and artistic and cultural knowledge. The project was a partnership between the municipalities, SESI Mariana and the Renova Foundation.

A workshop was held with the Secretary of Education of Mariana (MG), pedagogical staff and teachers of the Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo schools, both in Minas Gerais, for the collective construction of requirements for the Terms of Reference of Psychopedagogical Support. Another meeting took place with the local authorities of Barra Longa (MG) on a definitive solution for the José Vasconcelos Lana School.

Last month, the project “Bento Rodrigues: Our History, Our Life”, took place at the Municipal School Bento Rodrigues, in addition to a meeting with the board of the Paracatu de Baixo School to make plans regarding the property assigned for the full-time teaching program of the institution.

Last month meetings were held with the Municipal Government of Mariana and the parents of the students of Bento Rodrigues to collectively assess the request to change the location of the school. Moreover, three of the suggested sites have already been visited. This same period the building for the second group of the Paracatu School was handed over, as well as the didactic and pedagogical materials for the Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo schools.
